Improving Estimates of Earth’s Energy Balance

Improving Estimates of Earth’s Energy Balance

A letter recently published in Nature Climate Change details work partially funded by the CPO overviewing a strong agreement in measurements of Earth’s energy imbalance by Argo Profiling Floats and the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System, or CERES.

Because the ocean stores 90% of Earth’s energy imbalance, accurate measurements of ocean temperature are crucial. However, ocean heat energy changes are difficult to observe on a year to year basis despite the increase in observation data over the past decades.

The letter states that the agreement between the two independent measurements reinforces confidence in both Argo and CERES observations. These measurements also provide valuable insight for climate variability.
