CPO’s Piotrowicz presents at Marine Technology Society conference

New Ocean Today Video Released!

Steve Piotrowicz, of CPO’s Climate Observations Division, gave an invited presentation on the requirements for ocean observations to address climate processes at the Marine Technology Society TechSurge: Ocean Sensors conference in Weehawken, N.J. from April 1-2.

His presentation focused on accuracy and precision of sensors, temporal and spatial resolution of observations and the reasons for those  requirements.

The majority of the participants in the conference were manufactures of ocean instrumentation – sensors and sensor systems. There were presentations by users of ocean observations, the majority of which were coastal in nature and/or fisheries applications. There was a presentation by the Director of Technical Operations – Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE which has a $2M competition to Improve our Understanding of Ocean Acidification.  There was one manufacturer of sensors (SeaBird Electronics) that addressed climate requirements.

The structure of the conference was plenary sessions following by Working Groups.  Working Groups the first day were on systems and sensors for Chemical, Physical, and Biological observations.  The Groups on the second day were on applications:  Climate, Eco-Systems, and Hazards (Natural and Man-made).  The participants in the Chemistry (Day 1) and Climate (Day 2) groups were basically the same and I think a suitable dialogue took place and understanding developed.

When available, the conference results will be published in an Marine Technology Society publication.
