Message from the Director |

This week Knauss Fellowship interviews are being held all across NOAA and other federal agencies to match Knauss Fellows to host offices and programs. It’s an exciting and intensive process involving dozens of interviews and identifying our preferred candidates. We are ready! GOMO has benefited enormously from hosting more than 15 Fellows over the past 9 years. These early career professionals have brought outstanding skills and energy to GOMO - like our current Fellows Alie and Kyla! We look forward to identifying and enlisting our next set of Fellows.
I had the pleasure recently of briefing GOMO to our newest Deputy Assistant Administrator, Nancy Wallace. GOMO’s sponsored work is truly impressive and inspiring. I am pleased to report we have a new advocate and supporter and look forward to engaging Nancy in support of GOMO’s needs and plans. It’s a season of planning! Multiple strategic planning efforts have recently concluded and/or are underway. There are efforts underway to revise NOAA’s Arctic Plan, and develop a new NOAA Research-wide Ocean Carbon Observing Strategy. Lastly, we are working under a recently released interagency level ocean observing strategy. We look forward to working with the community on action steps that address these plans.
Lastly, the AGU Fall Meeting will be in Washington DC. We look forward to seeing many of you there (look for an exciting opportunity to celebrate with us at the NOAA booth!).

Adopt a Drifter's First Student Intern!
This summer, Stephen Lewis of Elkridge, MD joined GOMO and AOML as an intern to support the Adopt a Drifter program. During his internship, Stephen developed a NOAA SciJinks game that incorporated real drifter data from across the globe to help younger audiences understand marine debris and actions they can take to keep our oceans clean! Stephen gained valuable skills in coding languages that will help him complete his degree in statistics from the University of Delaware (Spring 2025) and pursue a career as a data scientist. Congratulations, Stephen! |

New Ocean Heat Webpage!
Check out GOMO's new webpage dedicated to Ocean Heat. This timely resource shares information about the impacts of a warming ocean and the numerous observing platforms, technologies, and programs that GOMO supports, such as the Argo Program, that help us measure heat in the ocean. |

GOMO Supports Three Ocean Carbon Workshops
In collaboration with the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program and the Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML), GOMO supported three workshops focused on improving and coordinating ocean carbon cycle science and observations in Boulder, Colorado from October 7-10, 2024. First, the Surface Ocean CO2 Reference Observing Network (SOCONET) meeting gathered NOAA project principal investigators for their annual coordination meeting; second, GML hosted a 2-day Ocean Constraints II Workshop to finalize a white paper focused on identifying actions need to work towards closing the global carbon budget; finally, NOAA Research subject matter experts met to discuss feedback on the NOAA Research Ocean Carbon Observing Strategic Plan first draft. Read more about these workshops. |

First GOMO All-Staff Meeting in Silver Spring
On August 20 and 21, the entire GOMO staff gathered in Silver Spring for an all-hands meeting. In the past four years, the GOMO team has grown by 62%, and this two-day meeting was the first to bring together the full team, including remote employees. The meeting consisted of team building exercises, discussions of work culture and team morale, exploring opportunities to leverage individual strengths to bolster collaboration, and ideating around how the program aims to grow in the coming years.
The workshop was facilitated by Chris Olex, a facilitator and speaker who specializes in personal and team development and has led the NOAA Women in Sciences Leadership workshop for several years. GOMO Deputy Director Jessica Snowden and program administrator Elizabeth Swiney led the meeting organization. |
