Melissa Smuck

Data Strategy Program Manager

Melissa joined GOMO in July 2024 as the Data Strategy Program Manager. She is excited to help foster greater program-wide consistency, interoperability, and accessibility of data to ultimately support improved data-driven decision making.

Melissa has a broad background in marine and coastal science and policy. Prior to joining GOMO, she worked as a Project Manager for the Texas Coastal Management Program at the Texas General Land Office. In that role, she led the development of the Texas Sediment Management Plan, served as project manager for coastal research and restoration grants, aided interagency policy efforts, and led agency efforts to improve databases and data products to support coastal project planning and environmental review.

Melissa earned her Ph.D. in Coastal and Marine System Science in 2021 from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, where she worked at the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies. Her research used in-situ sensor and discrete sample data, including public data sources, to investigate the spatial and temporal trends and driving factors of carbonate chemistry in the Texas estuaries. She also holds a M.S. in Environmental Science from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and a B.S. in Biology from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania.

In her free time, Melissa enjoys spending time with her family and her three dogs, cooking, painting, playing tennis, and being in nature.
