GOMO-Funded Project

Enabling Discovery for Climate Resilience: A Registry of Polar Observing Networks

This project received funding from the following: Inflation Recovery Act.

This project will integrate polar climate and environmental data with a catalog of systems that conduct or coordinate observation and monitoring in the Arctic and Antarctic. The Registry of Polar Observing Networks (RoPON) at https://polarobservingregistry.org/ will
advance beyond a proof of concept to make structured information about networks, data, and observing assets more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Also, a prototype Polar Observing Site Discovery tool will aggregate metadata for thousands
of facilities, observatories, supersites, buoys, moorings, and community-based observations.

Project Goals:

  1. Develop innovative resources that help to link the summed contributions of multiple systems.
  2. Advance through an iterative process with outreach, community engagement, collaboration, metadata curation, and web usability testing.
  3. Help to: co-locate and optimize limited resources; improve data and metadata discovery; avoid duplicated effort; guide assessment & planning; and inform local communities.
