Argo Program Receives 2022 IEEE Corporate Innovation Award

The international Argo Program has been recognized with a 2022 IEEE Corporate Innovation Award: “For innovation in large-scale autonomous observations in oceanography with global impacts in marine and climate science and technology.” The Argo Program was developed in 1999 and today supports a global array of about 3,800 robotic profiling floats that measure the temperature and salinity of the upper 2,000 meters (1.2 miles) of the ocean. The Argo Program has an international reach with participation from close to 30 countries. US Argo partners include: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, University of Washington, and NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Lab, Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Lab, and GOMO.

The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Each year the IEEE Awards Board recommends a select group of recipients to receive IEEE’s most prestigious honors for exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions that have made a lasting impact on technology, society, and the engineering profession. Read more about these awards.

Update: The award was accepted by Argo team members during the 2022 IEEE VIC Summit and Honors Ceremony on Friday, 6 May 2022 in San Diego, California, USA.
